Google Home suffers outage, Assistant stops responding to commands

Image
Google Home, the tech giant’s smart speaker suffered an outage where the Assistant did not respond to the users. Google Home is equipped with the AI-based assistant which responds to the launch phrases, ‘Ok Google’ or ‘Hey Google’. Unfortunately, Google Assistant was responding with, “Hmm, something went wrong. Try again in a few seconds,” or “There was a glitch. Try again in a few seconds.” Google updated saying that the glitch has been fixed now. The Google Home outage appears to have started from May 31 according to the complaints posted on Google Home Help Forum. Android Police reported that only the Google Home smart speaker was affected with this glitch, and the other devices with Google Assistant worked fine. Google Home users who pointed out the glitch on the forum said that they had tried resetting the device, and even changed the Wi-Fi network, but the problem was still occurring. To some users, the command ‘Ok Google’ would work 60 to 70 percent of the time, and...

The company managed to cover more than 100 stations till December 2016 and is working to add more every month. Seeing this as an opportunity, and the fact that its Free Basics programme did not gain steam in the country, Facebook has now partnered with Bharti Airtel to provide 20,000 Wi-Fi hotspots in India. With this collaboration, Facebook plans to use its Express Wi-Fi services to provide affordable internet access to Indians. Facebook was already testing its Express Wi-Fi services in India since 2015. Other countries where the affordable Wi-Fi services are available include - Tanzania, Kenya, Nigeria and Indonesia. Google Maps new feature lets users create lists of saved places that can be shared & accessed offline

Image
Users can keep track of saved places and share lists with others via text, email and popular messaging apps. Google Maps has added a new list-making feature that lets users save locations to a specified list so that it can be accessed later — even offline — and shared with other users. To save a location in Google Maps, tap on its name and then the “Save” icon to add it to a list. Lists of saved places can be organized under preset lists Google has already named, like “Want to go” or “Favorites,” or users can create a new list. Google says lists can be shared by text and email, on social networks and via popular messaging apps. From the Google Maps Blog: Whenever friends and family come to town, tap the share button to get a link and start flexing your local knowledge muscles. Once you send a link to your out-of-towners, they can tap “Follow” to pull up the list from Your Places whenever they need it. Google posted the following video to show how the new feature work...

First real look at the new Windows look and feel shows a very different taskbar

Image
The taskbar is getting ever so monochrome—even as apps are looking more exciting. At its developer day event yesterday, Microsoft spent a long time extolling the virtues of the Universal Windows Platform and the Windows 10 Creators Update to developers. But subtly, the company slipped in a screenshot that gives us a first look at Project Neon, the next iteration of the company's design language. The picture shows a refreshed version of the Groove music app on a Windows desktop. The fundamentals of the app and its layout aren't changed, underscoring that Neon is very much an iteration of the current Metro/Microsoft Design Language (MDL). The window has shed its discrete title bar and one pixel border, with the application content now extending to the very edge of the window. The search text field no longer has a box around it, and the left hand pane has a hint of translucency to it. This adds a little more visual interest. While Metro/MDL has long been assumed to...

Hippo, Magento, OroCommerce & More: Keeping Up With Open Source CMS

Image
Open source CMS projects hit the ground running in January, barely pausing after the end-of-the-year break. A Forrester web content management Wave was released, summits were held and words of digital war were declared.  If you missed out on any of last month’s action, here are the latest open source CMS headlines. Hippo The latest Forrester Wave WCM report ensured January was a big month for Hippo, a BloomReach company, which was promoted to the “Strong Performer” category. Hippo’s rapid rise through the ranks is well worth discussing.  Throughout 2014, Hippo was nowhere to be seen on any Forrester Wave. A year later, it debuted in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant as a “Niche Player” before being bumped up to “Visionary” status in 2016. Today, Forrester places Hippo comfortably alongside the industry’s most revered names. DNN The DNN Summit was held in Denver from Jan. 18 to 23. Hundreds of DNN users attended the event, which is managed by volunte...

Top 10 for 2017 – Happy Data Privacy Day

Image
In honor of Data Privacy Day, we provide the following “Top 10 for 2017.”  While the list is by no means exhaustive, it does provide some hot topics for organizations to consider in 2017. 1.  Phishing Attacks and Ransomware – Phishing, as the name implies, is the attempt, usually via email, to obtain sensitive or personal information by disguising oneself as a trustworthy source. The IRS reported a 400 percent surge in phishing and malware incidents in 2016 and dedicates a page on its website to phishing and online scams. A relatively simply, yet extremely effective safeguard against such an attack is for organizations to advise employees (especially those in HR and Payroll) to be on the lookout for email requests, often appearing to come from a supervisor, for the personal information of all, or large groups of, the company’s employees. Before responding electronically, employees should verbally confirm such requests. This is especially true as organizations begin t...

Google acquires Twitter's mobile app developers platform

Image
Google is acquiring Twitter's mobile application developer platform Fabric, a move which could give some breathing room for the social network after charting an independent path without a suitor.  Terms of the deal were not announced.  Twitter last year was in talks to sell itself with several firms including Google parent Alphabet, but without a deal decided to continue on an independent path, cutting jobs and refocusing on its core services.  The sale of Fabric will shift to Google the platform used by developers for mobile apps.  "When we launched Fabric in 2014, our goal was to provide the best tools to help developers create amazing apps," the Fabric team said in a blog post.  "Today we enter the next chapter for Fabric and are pleased to announce that we've signed an agreement for Fabric to be acquired by Google and for our team to join Google's Developer Products Group, working with the Firebase team."  Google Firebas...

8 SEO Trends You Need to Pay Attention to in 2017

Image
Knowing which techniques are most effective for driving traffic to your site is a learning curve that never flattens. A new year means new SEO speculation and trends. While there are some components of search engine optimization that have worked for several years and will continue to work, there will always be new trends that you need to shift your focus to. One of the most frequent questions I’m asked via direct message on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram is, “What’s new in terms of SEO?” It’s a constantly changing landscape that never sits idle long. Here are eight trends to be aware of as we start 2017. 1. HTTPS is no longer just an option. HTTPS (Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure) keeps data exchanged between your user's computer and your website secure. Consumers are much more internet savvy than they were a few years ago, and now expect nothing less than a secure experience when visiting a website. The cost to switch to HTTPS is minimal and aside from the sec...
